The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) is an intergovernmental organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. Established by the UPOV Convention, first adopted in Paris in 1961 and revised in 1972, 1978, and 1991, UPOV’s mission is to provide and promote an effective system of plant variety protection, encouraging the development of new plant varieties for the benefit of society.
UPOV operates in close partnership with WIPO, which hosts the organization and provides administrative support. Reflecting this collaboration and their shared focus on intellectual property, particularly in the field of plant innovation. The WIPO Library features UPOV’s collections as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers and stakeholders in agricultural development and IP.
